"BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has consented to attend the event. She will participate as per the advice of her medical board," said BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan on Thursday night (20 November).
Armed Forces Day commemorates the formation of Bangladesh's army, navy, and air force in 1971 and their all-out attack on Pakistani occupation forces. Since independence, the day has been observed annually across the country.
Programmes will begin with special prayers at mosques in cantonments, naval and air force establishments after Fajr, seeking blessings for the nation and the armed forces. Afterwards, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will place wreaths at 'Shikha Anirban' (the Eternal Flame) at Dhaka Cantonment, where the chiefs of the three services will also pay tribute.
Later, the chief adviser will host a reception at the Army Multipurpose Complex, meet families of Bir Sreshthas and gallantry award-winning freedom fighters, and distribute peace awards to armed forces personnel.
Programmes are also planned at army garrisons, naval ships, and air force bases nationwide.
Bangladesh Television will broadcast a special programme, 'Special Anirban', after its 8pm news bulletin today, and will cover the reception live tomorrow. Bangladesh Betar will also air 'Special Durbar' at 7:30pm tomorrow.
National dailies will publish supplements marking the occasion.
