3:30pm
Manual vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) election finally concluded today, around 40 nerve-wracking hours after the counting began, with the results expected to be announced after 4:30pm, officials said this afternoon (13 September).
Professor Sohel Ahmed, pro-vice-chancellor (administration) of the university, confirmed this information.
The final checking of results was underway when this report was filed.
Officials at the Senate building, where the counting took place, said earlier in the afternoon that the process of sorting and arranging the counted ballots was underway after the vote counting.
Voting began at 9am on Thursday and continued until 5pm. Counting started at 10:30pm that night and was completed today, some 45 hours after voting concluded and around 40 hours after counting began.
Previously, the election commission had repeatedly given different promises regarding the timeframe for completing the vote count and announcing the results.
When asked about the result announcement, Professor Md Moniruzzaman, the chief election commissioner, said, "The counting is complete, but some ancillary work remains. Once that is done, we hope to announce the results very soon."
Earlier in the day, Moniruzzaman told the media around noon that the final results of the election will be announced at 7pm today.
"We tried to announce the results by Friday night, but it was not possible to give a specific time. After the tragic death of one of our colleagues, the counting process had slowed down. Following another meeting with the vice-chancellor, the process resumed."
The prolonged process, marked by delays and boycotts, has left many questioning the credibility of the much-anticipated polls.
Meanwhile, JU Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam, who is serving as the Jucsu election commission member-secretary, told reporters that a lack of experience in conducting elections has delayed the results, as the university has not held central student union or hall elections in 33 years.
"Each ballot is being carefully checked and analysed to ensure accuracy, which is why it is taking longer. Every vote is valuable, and the final results will be well-organised and valid."
Notably, Jannatul Ferdous, an assistant professor at the university's Department of Fine Arts who worked as a polling officer at Pritilata Hal, died yesterday after falling ill while on duty during the vote count, with Professor Sultana Akhtar, returning officer at the Nawab Faizunnesa Hall voting centre, later blaming severe administrative mismanagement during the counting process for her death.
