Elders are roots of our present, pathfinders for our future: President
He made the call in a message issued on the eve of the International Day of Older Persons 2026, which will be observed tomorrow.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said older people are not merely part of the stories of the past, but the roots of the present and pathfinders for the future.
"Older people are not the stories of our past; rather, they are the roots of our present and pathfinders for our future. Today's Bangladesh has been built on their efforts, sweat, talent, sacrifice and proficiency.
But a large number of them are passing their days amid economic uncertainty, deteriorating health and loneliness," he said.

The president urged all to come forward to build a just and humane society by ensuring care and dignity for the elderly community.
He made the call in a message issued on the eve of the International Day of Older Persons 2026, which will be observed tomorrow.
In his message, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir conveyed his heartfelt respect to all elderly people in Bangladesh and around the world and welcomed the initiative to observe the day in Bangladesh, alongside other countries.
"The average human lifespan has increased due to remarkable advances in medical science and improved lifestyles, causing the number of older people to gradually increase worldwide. This has enabled us to rethink their healthcare services, social security, housing and employment management systems," he said.
"In this context, I consider the theme of the day, 'The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives', as timely and significant," he added.
"Human beings naturally grow older, and therefore, ensuring a safe and dignified old age is a must," he said.
"Our Constitution also ensures social security for the growing number of elderly people, and ensuring social security infrastructure for them is a state responsibility," he added, referring to Article 15(d) of the Constitution.
The president said the current government has taken various measures for the welfare and development of senior citizens.
"In continuation of these efforts, the present government has allocated Tk 5,239 crore for the old-age allowance sector in the fiscal year 2026-27 and increased both the number of beneficiaries and the amount of allowance," he said.
He called upon private institutions, social and philanthropic organisations, affluent individuals and families to come forward and play a more active role in ensuring the welfare of senior citizens.
He expressed hope that these initiatives would contribute positively to ensuring the welfare and dignified lives of senior citizens.
"Let love and respect for senior citizens, their smiling faces and a safe old age be our commitment. I wish all senior citizens in Bangladesh and around the world good health and a peaceful life," he said, wishing overall success of all programmes undertaken on the occasion of the day.
