35 injured as two BNP factions clash in Cumilla
The clash reportedly stemmed from a long-standing dispute over establishing political dominance in Meghna’s Nalchar village.
At least 35 people were injured, several of them reportedly hit by spears, as two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clashed in Cumilla's Meghna upazila early today (29 September).
The clash took place in Nalchar village of Chalibhanga union, said Meghna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam.
According to locals, a long-standing dispute over establishing political dominance in the area has been ongoing between Rabiuallah Rabi Sarker, convener of Chalibhanga Union Jubo Dal, and local BNP leader Abdul Barek.
Supporters of Abdul Barek allegedly attacked Rabi Sarker's supporters first, prompting a counterattack by the latter's supporters and triggering the clash.
Members of both groups allegedly used locally made weapons. At one point, the groups exchanged bricks and stones and threw spears, leaving at least 35 people injured.
The injured received treatment at local healthcare facilities, locals said.
"The situation is now under police control. Legal action will be taken after investigating the incident," the OC said.
