A joyful trip turned into a devastating tragedy in Chunati Jangalia area of Lohagara upazila in Chattogram as two families were wiped out in a horrific road accident on Wednesday morning that claimed 10 lives.
The families were travelling together in a microbus, heading to Cox's Bazar for a vacation.
At dawn, their microbus collided head-on with a Relax Paribahan bus heading towards Chattogram. The deadly crash instantly claimed the lives of seven passengers, leaving behind only wreckage and shattered dreams.
Chattogram Highway Police said among the victims were 43-year-old Dilip Biswas from Jhenaidah's Shailkupa, his 37-year-old wife Sadhana Mondal, and his 50-year-old father-in-law Ashish Mondal. Another family included 46-year-old Rafiqul Islam Shamim from Dhaka's Mirpur, his 35-year-old wife Lutfun Nahar Sumi, their 16-year-old daughter Anisa, and their eight-year-old daughter Liyana. The microbus driver, 55-year-old Yusuf Ali from Dhaka's Dakshin Khan, also died in the crash.
Three survivors in critical condition
The three survivors – 18-year-old Durjoy Mondal, 18-year-old Prema, and seven-year-old Aradhya Biswas – are fighting for their lives. They are unaware that their families perished
Dr Md Saiful, head of the Neurosurgery Department at CMCH, said none of the survivors were out of danger. One of them has been transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment.
Aradhya keeps searching for her parents
After regaining her senses, seven-year-old Aradhya kept searching for her parents, unaware that they were no longer alive.
Dr Saiful said Aradhya's leg was broken, and she had suffered severe injuries to her head, hands, and eyes. Although she has regained consciousness, her condition remains critical.
A deadly stretch
The Chunati Jangalia area has become a death trap in recent days. On Eid morning, another accident in the same area claimed five lives. Just a day before Wednesday's tragedy, another accident injured at least seven people when two microbuses plunged into a ditch and turned turtle after losing control.
