Jamaat's women wing forms human chain demanding justice for violence against women
Nurunnisa also questioned the government’s silence.
The women's wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital today (28 February), calling for action against rising incidents of violence, murder and rape targeting women nationwide.
Speaking at the event, the party's Women's Affairs Secretary Nurunnisa Siddika said, "They previously came to the streets demanding justice for the murder of Achiya. As a result, the then home adviser of the previous interim government sought one month to ensure justice.
"But where is the implementation of that trial?" She asked, further adding, "If the law is not enforced, it holds no value."
Nurunnisa also questioned the government's silence.
"You have taken responsibility for 18 crore people. How are you fulfilling that responsibility? You are protected by four layers of security, but how many layers of security do ordinary citizens receive?" she added.
She further said that people should at least feel safe in their own homes.
Central Executive Council Member of Jamaat's women wing, Amena Begum said, "During the month of Ramadan, which is meant to be a time of peace and security, we have been forced to take to the streets. Incidents of abuse against children are occurring in different parts of the country."
"Everyone must come forward to stop violence against women and children," she added.
