India is expected to resume all types of visa services for Bangladeshis, including tourist visas, following the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for April.
A senior official at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard that the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections are likely to be held in April for all 294 constituencies, after which India is expected to resume visa services.
Earlier, on 18 February, Aniruddha Roy, senior consular officer at the Indian mission in Sylhet, told journalists that the process to fully restore all visa services has already begun.
Speaking at the Sylhet District Press Club, Aniruddha said that while medical and double-entry visas are currently being issued, necessary steps are being taken to reopen other categories, including tourist visas, in the near future.
"We are making every effort to simplify visa services," he added. Visa services from Bangladesh to India were largely suspended immediately after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.
While emergency medical visas remained operational, there have been complaints that many patients were unable to obtain them.
Subsequently, in the context of bilateral tensions, Bangladesh also imposed visa restrictions on Indian nationals.
