84% dengue deaths occur within 3 days of hospitalisation: DGHS
Seven more dengue patients have died and 2,742 were hospitalised in 24 hours

Around 84% of all dengue patients who died last week across the country succumbed to the disease within three days of hospitalisation, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Last week saw 90 dengue-related fatalities and in the 24 hours till Sunday morning, seven more people died, taking the toll for this month to 97 and for this year to 1,086 – a record. The country saw 281 dengue deaths in 2022, the previous record for highest annual deaths. Around 2,742 patients were hospitalised with the viral fever in the 24 hours till Sunday morning, the health directorate added.
As per the directorate, 63 or 70% of dengue deaths happened within a day of hospitalisation and 13 or 14% happened within two to three days of hospitalisation.
Moreover, around 5% of patients died after four to five days of hospital stay. The mortality rate was lowest among those hospitalised for 10 days or more, at 2%.
Last week, dengue shock syndrome was the leading cause of fatalities. Around 82% of deaths occurred due to shock syndrome, 12% of deaths due to expanded dengue syndrome and 6% of deaths due to dengue hemorrhagic fever.
A total of 8,800 dengue patients, including 2,826 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country. This year dengue cases and deaths have broken all the previous records.
So far, the Directorate General of Health has recorded 2,23,564 dengue cases and 2,13,678 recoveries this year.
Additionally, the DGHS recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year.
