The body of a Dhaka University (DU) student has been found hanging from the ceiling in a dormitory in the capital's Elephant Road.

The deceased has been identified as Anika Meherunnesa Sahi, 24, a student of the DU's Department of Management. She was the daughter of Firoz Hossain of Notun Hat village in Joypurhat.

New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohsin told The Business Standard that Anika's unconscious body was recovered from a room on the eighth floor of Maksud Tower at around 11pm yesterday (23 February).

Later, when she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared her dead, he said.

"Initial investigation has revealed that the student may have committed suicide over a dispute with her boyfriend. In this incident, a Bangladesh University of Textiles [Butex] student has been taken into custody for questioning," he added.
