Hadi murder: Inqilab Mancha blocks Shah Amanat Bridge in Ctg demanding justice
Due to the blockade, buses, trucks and other vehicles remained stuck on the bridge, while long tailbacks formed on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway
Leaders and activists of Inqilab Mancha blocked the entry point of Shah Amanat Bridge in Chattogram city today (28 December), demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, triggering severe traffic congestion on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway.
As part of a pre-announced programme, reportedly hundreds of youths gathered at the bridge entrance in the Bakalia area around 2pm, where more protesters later joined them.
Holding national flags and placards demanding justice for Hadi's killing, the demonstrators chanted slogans and vowed not to leave the streets until all those responsible are arrested and brought to trial.
Due to the blockade, buses, trucks and other vehicles remained stuck on the bridge, while long tailbacks formed on the Chattogram–Cox's Bazar highway.
Mohammad Solaiman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakalia Police Station, said the protesters initially blocked both lanes of the bridge.
"After discussions, we managed to clear one side and restore limited traffic towards Cox's Bazar. Efforts are ongoing to remove the protesters from the other side," he told The Business Standard.
A day earlier, Inqilab Mancha activists staged a similar protest by occupying the busy New Market intersection in the city.
Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure of the July Uprising and an aspiring independent candidate for the upcoming elections, was shot in the head in the Paltan area on 12 December.
After being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital, he was airlifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on 18 December.
