7 essentials for safer long drives this Eid
While regular vehicle maintenance remains essential, certain accessories can significantly improve both safety and comfort during holiday travel
As Eid approaches, highways across Bangladesh begin their annual transformation. What are usually steady inter-district routes turn into dense rivers of buses, private cars, motorcycles and microbuses, all moving in the same direction: home.
Families leave Dhaka before dawn to beat traffic on the Dhaka–Mawa Expressway, others prepare for long stretches toward Chattogram, Sylhet or Rangpur. Vehicles are fully loaded, schedules are tight, and patience often runs thin.
In this setting, long-distance driving becomes more than a matter of fuel and navigation. Extended hours behind the wheel increase fatigue, while heavy traffic and unpredictable road behaviour demand constant alertness. Small discomforts add up. Minor mechanical issues become major risks. Visibility can change within minutes due to dust, fog or rain.
While regular vehicle maintenance remains essential, certain accessories can significantly improve both safety and comfort during holiday travel. The following seven items are practical additions that can make long highway drives safer and less physically draining.
1. Ergonomic seat cushions and lumbar support
Most factory-installed seats are designed for average commuting distances. On a four- or five-hour highway drive, especially in vehicles without advanced seat adjustments, lower back strain becomes a common complaint.
An ergonomic seat cushion with built-in lumbar support helps maintain proper spinal alignment. Memory foam options that distribute body weight evenly can reduce pressure on the hips and lower back. Breathable materials are particularly useful in Bangladesh's humid climate, preventing excessive sweating and discomfort.
By improving posture, these cushions help drivers maintain focus for longer periods. Reduced physical strain directly contributes to better reaction times and sustained concentration.
2. High-quality windshield wipers and rain repellent treatment
Weather conditions can shift quickly during Eid travel, especially when summer is right around the corner. Sudden heavy rainfall can drastically reduce visibility within seconds.
Worn-out windshield wipers tend to smear water rather than clear it, creating streaks that impair vision. Replacing old blades before a long trip is a simple but often overlooked step. Pairing new wipers with a rain-repellent windshield treatment helps water bead and roll off at highway speeds, maintaining clearer sightlines.
Improved visibility not only enhances safety but also reduces driver stress, particularly when navigating crowded roads or poorly lit highway sections.
3. Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Vehicles travelling during Eid are typically carrying additional passengers and luggage, increasing load on the tyres. Incorrect tyre pressure under these conditions can lead to uneven wear, reduced fuel efficiency and, in extreme cases, blowouts.
A tyre pressure monitoring system provides real-time information about each tyre's pressure and, in some models, temperature. For vehicles not equipped with factory-installed TPMS, aftermarket systems are widely available and relatively easy to install.
Early detection of pressure loss allows drivers to address issues before they escalate, especially on stretches of highway where service facilities may be limited or overcrowded.
4. Portable air compressor and puncture repair kit
Despite improved road infrastructure, punctures and slow leaks remain common, particularly on routes with ongoing construction or uneven surfaces.
A compact 12-volt portable air compressor enables drivers to adjust tyre pressure as needed, especially after long hours of continuous driving. When combined with a basic tubeless tyre puncture repair kit, it provides a temporary solution for minor damage.
While not a substitute for professional repair, these tools can help drivers reach the nearest service station without prolonged roadside delays, which can be both inconvenient and hazardous during peak traffic periods.
5. Secure phone mount with fast car charger
Smartphones now serve as primary navigation tools, offering real-time traffic updates and alternative route suggestions. During Eid, when congestion levels can change rapidly, navigation apps become indispensable.
A stable phone mount positioned within the driver's natural line of sight reduces the need to glance away from the road for extended periods. Windshield or dashboard-mounted holders with strong grips are preferable to improvised placements.
A fast car charger ensures uninterrupted access to navigation, communication and emergency contacts. Continuous GPS usage and mobile data can drain batteries quickly, particularly on extended journeys.
6. Wide-angle blind spot mirrors
Highway traffic during Eid is rarely predictable. Motorcycles weave between lanes, buses overtake aggressively, and private cars frequently change lanes without warning.
Most factory side mirrors do not come with blind spot indicators and thus can conceal smaller vehicles. Adhesive convex blind spot mirrors expand the field of vision, allowing drivers to detect vehicles approaching from angles that would otherwise remain hidden.
Although they do not replace proper mirror adjustment or shoulder checks, these mirrors add an extra layer of visual awareness, particularly valuable in dense holiday traffic.
7. Comprehensive emergency kit
An emergency kit remains one of the most important yet underutilised accessories for long-distance travel. At a minimum, it should include a reflective warning triangle, high-visibility vest, basic first-aid supplies, flashlight and jumper cables.
In the event of a breakdown, the reflective triangle alerts approaching vehicles, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions. A high-visibility vest improves driver safety when stepping out onto the roadside. A basic first-aid kit allows immediate response to minor injuries.
Given the heavy traffic and extended travel times during Eid, preparedness plays a crucial role in risk management.
