Dhaka, Delhi resume talks to finalise Tarique's India visit in November: Report

India and Bangladesh have resumed official-level talks to finalise plans for a visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi in November, The Hindu reported yesterday (17 September), citing diplomatic sources.

Efforts are underway to schedule Tarique's visit to India "during a suitable window" in November, after his diplomatic engagements, sources in Dhaka told the Indian newspaper.

The Bangladesh prime minister is scheduled to go to New York for the UN General Assembly session in September, after which he will have multiple diplomatic engagements between October and November.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has held a series of meetings with Bangladesh ministers and advisers in the last few days.

Officials from both sides have continued meetings in Dhaka and are working to finalise an agenda for the visit. The agenda will include the regularisation of bilateral trade affected by strained political relations and questions over the Ganges water-sharing accord, which expires in December, among other issues, the daily reported. 

Tarique was invited by India to the BRICS summit in New Delhi last week in his capacity as the Bimstec chairman, but he did not attend, nor did Dhaka send any representative to the event.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir has said Dhaka wants to "reset" ties with India and, for that, will "prioritise" a bilateral visit at a "conducive" time.

Dhaka had earlier expressed "outrage" over ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's virtual press conference in New Delhi on August 5.

Hasina and several of her former ministerial colleagues have been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for their role in the July Uprising, which led to the ouster of her regime in August 2024.
