Gold ornaments, cash stolen from 150-year-old Hindu temple in Chattogram
According to the temple authorities, about six bhori of gold and ten bhori of silver, worth roughly Tk10 lakh in total, were stolen
Gold and silver ornaments along with donation money have been stolen from the idol and donation box of the 150-year-old Sadarghat Kali Temple in Chattogram.
The theft took place last night (8 November), temple authorities said.
Sana Bhattacharya, a member of the temple's caretaker family, said a gold crown weighing around four bhori, a silver crown weighing two bhori, a pair of earrings, a chain with a locket weighing two bhori, a silver necklace weighing four bhori, and a gold locket weighing four annas were stolen.
The temple's donation box, containing about Tk1 lakh in offerings from devotees, was also broken open and emptied.
Sana said members of the caretaker family live in a tin-shed house inside the temple compound.
"The roof of our house is connected to the temple through a wooden frame with a glass ventilator. We discovered the theft around 7am when we opened the temple door. The main gate was still locked, so we believe the thieves entered through the roof and the ventilator gap," he told The Business Standard.
Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Iqbal Hossain said, "We are close to identifying the culprits and hope to arrest them soon. The thieves climbed onto the tin roof and broke the glass ventilator to enter the temple."
According to the temple authorities, about six bhori of gold and ten bhori of silver, worth roughly Tk10 lakh in total, were stolen.
"There was no CCTV at the temple, but we are conducting an intensive investigation," the inspector said, adding, "The temple authorities have filed a case over the incident."
