A devastating fire broke out in the historic Sreenagar Bazar of Munshiganj in the early hours of Friday (16 May), gutting more than 50 shops.

The blaze began around 2am and quickly spread through the market's key sections, particularly the Kapor Patti, Bania Patti, and Murgi Patti.

According to Dewan Azad, station officer of the Sreenagar Fire Service, fire units rushed to the scene shortly after 2am. Six fire service units worked for nearly three hours to bring the flames under control by around 5am, although the fire was not completely extinguished at the time of reporting.

Witnesses and residents said the fire was difficult to contain, as it would flare up again even after one alley was brought under control. Firefighters struggled to manage the situation, but eventually succeeded with help from local police and shopkeepers.

"The fire kept reigniting in different parts of the market, especially in the narrower lanes. But thanks to coordinated efforts, we managed to bring it under control," said Station Officer Azad.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, preliminary reports suggest that at least 50 clothing, grocery, and poultry shops were completely destroyed.

Traders in the area have suffered immense losses. The usually bustling market was filled with grief and despair as devastated shopkeepers surveyed the charred remains of their businesses.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and authorities have begun assessing the total extent of the damage.
