The Border Guard Bangladesh has detained three people, including former member of parliament ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury of Raozan upazila, while they were attempting to flee to India through Brahmanbaria's Akhaura border.

BGB Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam confirmed the incident to The Business Standard.

He stated that a patrol team from Fakirmora BOP, part of BGB's Sarail Battalion (25 BGB), detained the three individuals as they were crossing the border illegally from Abdullahpur, Akhaura, into India around 6:30am today (12 Septmber).

"The other detainees are Md Hannan Molla, a former union parishad member from Nurpur, Akhaura, and Md Naeem Chowdhury, a resident of Akhaura and a member of a human trafficking gang," he added.

"The process of transferring the detainees to Akhaura police station is underway," Shariful further said.

Fazle Karim Chowdhury had been in hiding since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August, following a mass uprising led by students. Several cases have already been filed against him in Chattogram and Raozan.

He was elected as a member of parliament for five consecutive terms from the Chittagong-6 (Raozan) constituency under the Awami League nomination since 2001.
