Seven people including former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's adviser Salman F Rahman, and former ministers Hasanul Haq Inu and Rashed Khan Menon, have been shown arrested in six separate cases filed with four police stations in Dhaka involving incidents during the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq granted the police's request to show them arrested in these cases following hearings today (21 July).
The investigation officers produced the accused before the court and submitted petitions to show them arrested in connection with the respective cases. The court approved the requests accordingly.
Other individuals shown arrested include former Dhaka North City mayor Atiqul Islam, former MP Sadeq Khan, and lawyer-activist former MP Syed Sayedul Haque Suman.
One of the key cases involves an attempted murder charge filed with Mohammadpur Police Station. The case alleges that on 19 July 2024, during the protests of anti-discrimination student movement on the streets near Mayur Villa in Mohammadpur, protester Shahriyar Hossain Rokon was shot in the leg and collapsed. On 3 September, Rokon's father filed the case, accusing Anisul, Salman, Inu, Menon, and Atiqul of being involved with the death.
Another case, filed with Mugda Police Station, states that on 18 July 2023, lawyer Abdul Aset Shamim was returning home from court when he was hit by rubber bullets in multiple parts of his body in the Babu Doctor's Lane area. The bullets, allegedly fired by protestors, led to severe health complications. He later received treatment at Mugda Medical College. On 1 September 2023, a case was filed naming 51 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sayedul Haque Suman.
Sadeq Khan was also shown arrested in the Mohammadpur case related to Shahriyar Hossain Rokon's injury during the same protest.
