Teachers across all government colleges in Bangladesh have gone on strike today (14 October) in protest of the harassment of a teacher at Dhaka College. As a result, all examinations under the National University, including those at government and private colleges, have been postponed.
At the same time, officials from the BCS (General Education) cadre are observing a sit-in wearing black badges at their respective institutions.
The BCS General Education Association announced the programme in a statement signed by its convener, Professor Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, and member secretary, Dr Md Masud Rana Khan, last night (13 October).
In the statement, the association strongly condemned the attack on teachers, officials, and students, as well as the vandalism of the Teachers' Lounge at the historic Dhaka College. It also demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the incident.
The statement further said that teachers at all government colleges, including those in Dhaka, would observe a complete work abstention today. All officials under the BCS General Education cadre have been urged to participate in the programme to ensure its success.
"The attack on teachers and students is completely unacceptable," the association leaders said, adding that such incidents create fear and unrest on campuses, posing a serious threat to the national education system.
The unrest began yesterday morning (13 October), when a group of students from seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University held a procession at Dhaka College, demanding the quick implementation of the Dhaka Central University Act 2025. During the march, an altercation broke out between students and teachers.
At one point, a student reportedly called the teachers "dalal", prompting the teachers to detain him in the common room. His classmates later surrounded the administrative building and freed him, sparking further tension and confrontation between teachers and students.
Associate Professor Dr Md Dellur Rahman, secretary of the Dhaka College Unit of the BCS General Education Association, said, "While a discussion was underway at the Teachers' Lounge, some students broke the glass walls and chanted offensive slogans. A meeting was later held at the auditorium, and as per the decision taken there, teachers across all government colleges are today observing a complete work abstention and wearing black badges in protest of the attack."
