Teachers of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) have demanded resignation of Buet vice-chancellor Prof Dr Saiful Islam.

Accusing the VC for the failure to protect Buet student Abrar Fahad, his colleagues also urged the government to remove him if the teacher does not step aside voluntarily.

Buet students on Wednesday morning took position on the campus Shaheed Minar premises continuing the protests for straight third day. Buet Teachers' Association President Professor AKM Masud and his colleagues joined them at noon.

Professor Masud said, "Our association has decided that the VC will have to resign. Today's situation surfaced as Buet did not take any step over previous student harassment issues."

"We are holding him responsible. He has to step down. We are urging the government to remove him if he does not leave the post voluntarily," added the professor.

Earlier, the teachers held an urgent meeting at 10:00am.

Police in the wee hours of Monday recovered the body of Abrar Fahad, a second year student of the elite technological university of Bangladesh. The 21-year-old student was dumped on a staircase of the university dorm with fatal injuries.

Earlier on Sunday night, Abrar was summoned by Buet Chhatra League leaders. They allegedly tortured Abrar to death over a facebook post.

Police subsequently arrested ten students including the Buet chapter general secretary of the student wing for their involvement in the murder. Abrar's father also lodged a murder case accusing 19 including the ten arrested pupils.
