A 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered by a relative in Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram early yesterday.

The suspect also severely injured her grandparents, who witnessed the crime, leaving them in critical condition. They are currently receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

The deceased, Arzu Akter, had visited her grandparents — Abdul Hakim, 70, and Farida Akter, 60 — at their home in Noyapara, South Gachbaria, under Chandanaish municipality.

According to police, Nazim Uddin, 30, a relative from Satkania upazila and believed to be a cousin of Arzu's mother, is suspected of strangling Arzu to death during her visit.

Police suspect that Nazim may have attempted to rape Arzu before killing her. When her grandmother tried to stop him, he reportedly attacked her with a sharp weapon. Her grandfather was also injured while trying to help. Nazim then fled the scene, taking Farida Akter's mobile phone.

Md Nuruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandanaish Police Station, said, "Nazim strangled Arzu using a scarf, which was found stuffed in her mouth."

He added that Arzu's body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, while her grandparents remain in critical condition.

No case had been filed as of the filing of this news report. Police said Nazim is still on the run, and efforts are underway to arrest him.
