Smuggled Indian women's clothing worth Tk41 lakh seized in Dhaka; 1 arrested

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a man from Shahbag in the capital with a large quantity of women's clothing allegedly smuggled from India evading customs duty.
A covered van and a car used to transport the goods were also seized, said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the DMP's Media Wing.
The DB team from the Ramna Division carried out the raid around 8:30pm yesterday, based on a tip-off, and arrested the driver, Sohel, who is a resident of Cumilla.
According to DB sources, police recovered 1,207 sarees, 1,288 three-piece suits, and 13 bundles of unstitched fabric from a covered van and a car.
The estimated market value of the seized items is approximately Tk41.23 lakh.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Deputy Commissioner of DB's Ramna Division Elias Kabir said, "A syndicate smuggled these clothes from India without paying customs duty. They had brought them here to supply to various markets in Shahbag and Gulistan."
A case has been filed under the Special Powers Act at Shahbag Police Station against the arrested individual and further legal proceedings are underway, he added.
