The former vice principal of Habibullah Bahar College, Mohammad Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan, was killed in Uttarkhan, Dhaka, after allegedly attempting to rape a young woman, revealed Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Division, Md Mahidul Islam.
Describing how the woman and her husband met the teacher the DC said, "The couple was stranded at Kamalapur Railway Station after losing their money and belongings and found themselves in a vulnerable situation. Seeing their distress, former Vice Principal of Habibullah Bahar College, Mohammad Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan, offered them jobs and took them to his house in Uttarkhan."
"However, his true intentions were different—he repeatedly harassed the young woman whenever her husband was away," said the DC quoting the couple, who are now under police custody, at a press conference at the DMP Media Center today (12 March).
Md Mahidul Islam said, the situation escalated on Sunday night (9 March) when Saifur Rahman allegedly attempted to rape the woman.
Her husband protested, leading to a physical altercation. In the heat of the moment, the husband attacked Saifur Rahman with a sharp weapon, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene, he said.
On 11 March, police arrested the couple from the Faridpur railway station area.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Nazim Hossain, 21 and Rupa Begum, also known as Jannati, 23.
Upon their arrest, police recovered two mobile phones, a key ring, and a bank visa card from them. Earlier, law enforcement officials seized a sharp machete, a knife, blood-stained clothes, and a bedsheet from the victim's apartment as evidence.
According to Md Mahidul Islam, between 2am and 4am on 10 March, Mohammad Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan was murdered in his fourth-floor apartment of a six-story building in the Puranpara Batan area of Uttarkhan.
Following the incident, his younger brother, Mohammad Lutfar Rahman Bhuiyan, filed a case with the Uttarkhan police station on 11 March.
In the case statement, the victim's brother mentioned that Saifur had been living in a rented apartment in Uttarkhan's Puranpara Batan area for the past three to four months while overseeing the construction of a house on his wife's inherited property nearby.
On the night of the murder, the couple and Saifur Rahman were sleeping in the same room of Saifur's house. When Nazim fell asleep, Saifur attempted to rape Rupa. Waking up to the commotion, Nazim grabbed a machete from the kitchen and attacked Saifur repeatedly, leading to his death due to excessive bleeding, said the DC.
During the initial interrogation, the arrested couple confessed to the murder, he added.
They have been sent to court for legal proceedings.
