Son held after father hacked to death in Cox's Bazar

A 65-year-old businessman was allegedly hacked to death by his son with a sharp weapon in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar district this afternoon (22 May). Local residents immediately cornered and apprehended the suspect at the scene before handing him over to law enforcement personnel.
The incident occurred at around 2pm in the Moulvir kum area under Ward-6 of Chakaria municipality, according to Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monir Hossain. The deceased, identified as Khalilur Rahman, was a local businessman.
Citing family members and eyewitness accounts, OC Monir Hossain stated that the assault took place when Khalilur Rahman was returning home after attending Jummah prayers.
The suspect, identified as his son, Minarul Islam, intercepted him on the path and repeatedly struck him with a machete, inflicting critical wounds across his entire body. The severity of the attack completely severed the elderly man's left wrist from his arm.
Witnessing the horrific assault, nearby residents rushed forward, rescued the victim from his son's grasp, and rushed him to the Chakaria Government Hospital. However, the attending physician officially pronounced him dead upon arrival.
"Upon receiving information regarding the homicide, a police team recovered the body and sent it to the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination," OC Monir Hossain confirmed.
He added that the victim's son remains in police custody, and the process of initiating formal legal actions against him is currently underway.
