Police have arrested a couple for inhumanly torturing their 15-year-old niece, who they used as a domestic help, in Chandpur district town.

The girl fled from the house of her maternal uncle and aunt to protect herself from further torture yesterday (6 March). Later, after learning about the matter from locals, police rescued her and took her to a hospital, reports Prothom Alo.

The victim has been identified Rozina Aktar, the daughter of Ali Mohammad Bhuiyan from Bakharpur village under Chandra union in Chandpur.

Ali lodged a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, against his brother-in-law Rubel Molla and Rubel's wife, at Chandpur Model Police Station last night, confirmed the station's Officer-in-Charge Bahar Mia

"The victim has been admitted to the hospital, while the accused couple have been arrested," he said.

The child said that her uncle and aunt used to beat her for no reason. They have hurt her using knives, machetes, and blades. They even burned her with a hot spatula and crushed her toes, reports Prothom Alo.

She said she was not given proper food and was not allowed to meet or talk to her parents. Yesterday, when her aunt was not home, she managed to escape from their house.

The girl is currently receiving treatment at the 250-bed General Hospital in Chandpur town.

In the case statement, Ali said although his brother-in-law Rubel Molla took his daughter to his house in Dhaka a year ago for taking care of his son, who is a person with disability, she had to do the work of a domestic help.

He alleged that the couple did not let the family contact the child for almost a year. The child fled yesterday and the locals informed the police after seeing her condition.
