The deceased has been identified as Akash Ghosh, 26. He ran three mobile servicing centres in the market with his elder brother Riazuddin.
According to locals, Akash went with a friend to collect payment for a repaired mobile phone around 1:30am in Kasaipara area. During a dispute, unidentified men stabbed him and fled. He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept in the hospital morgue.
The CCTV footage of the incident shows four young men engaged in an argument in a narrow alley in the Kasaipara area. At one point, an elderly woman arrives at the scene and asks them to leave. Moments later, a youth in a black T-shirt suddenly attacks Akash with a knife, who is wearing a white T-shirt.
Several women from nearby houses rush forward in an attempt to save Akash. Another young man in a red T-shirt then joins the attack. After multiple consecutive blows, Akash collapses to the ground. The attackers flee immediately afterwards.
Local residents later rescue Akash and take him to the hospital. Once everyone leaves the scene, a woman is seen trying to wash bloodstains off the road with water.
