Alleged drug traders, teen gang members rally in support of Mohammadpur OC amid allegations
Their show of support came in response to allegations accusing the OC of collusion with criminal networks operating in the area
Alleged top drug dealers and members of teen gangs and extortion rings in the capital's Geneva Camp formed a human chain yesterday (28 July) protesting a recent demonstration that demanded the removal of Mohammadpur Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Iftekhar Hasan.
Their show of support came in response to allegations accusing the OC of collusion with criminal networks operating in the area.
Speaking at the human chain, an alleged drug peddler, Sohel alias "Buniya Sohel", told reporters, "We stand by the OC. Police are the public's friends. If there's any error, the police will investigate. The people shouldn't spread baseless rumours. He has helped us, and we must consider the police as our ally."
Similarly, fellow attendees including alleged drug trafficker Bechu alias "Langra Bechu" and alleged gang leader Rakib alias "Hat Bhanga Rakib" affirmed they want the OC to remain at the station.
Meanwhile, in response to the alleged rising influence of teen gangs, extortion, and drug abuse in Mohammadpur and Adabar areas in Dhaka, over 70 schools and colleges in the area united today (29 July) to stage coordinated protests calling for a safer, more principled community.
Under the slogan "Build a drug- and gang-free, just Mohammadpur-Adabor through education and shared values", teachers and students formed human chains in front of their institutions, holding placards that read, "Say no to drugs, say yes to dreams", and "Not gangs, but a just society".
At around 11:30am, the day's events culminated in a rally involving hundreds of participants. It began at Mohammadpur Kendriya College and moved through Nurjahan Road, Town Hall, and ended at Tajmahal Road.
