A Dhaka court today (21 August) sent a man to jail over the alleged killing of a 20-year-old youth in Mohammadpur after he was reportedly lured out of his home on the pretext of going for snacks and then beaten over a previous dispute.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manzurul Islam passed the order after hearing a police petition seeking to keep accused Md Parvez in jail, said Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman.
Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Akkel Ali, also the investigating officer in the case, produced Parvez before the court and sought his detention.
According to the case documents, the accused called Jihad and his friend Nirob out of their Hazaribagh home on the night of 17 August, saying they were going out for snacks.
They were then taken to a tin-shed room on the third floor of Nurjahan's house on Idris Khan Road in Rayerbazar, under Mohammadpur Police Station, where several other accused were already waiting, the case statement says.
The group allegedly surrounded Jihad and Nirob and beat them with bamboo sticks, iron rods and the blunt sides of machetes over a previous dispute. Both were seriously injured, and their hands were allegedly broken.
After the assault, Jihad became seriously ill. Around 2pm on 18 August, Parvez allegedly took him by autorickshaw and left him in front of his home before fleeing.
His family members later admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Uttara General Hospital, where he died at around 10:30am on 19 August while undergoing treatment.
Jihad's Poco mobile phone was also allegedly snatched from him, according to the case.
Following his death, Jihad's father, Md Mosharaf Hossain, filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Police arrested Parvez on 20 August from in front of Maritimes on Hashem Khan Road in Rayerbazar.
Police said they recovered Jihad's black Poco X3 Pro from Parvez's possession at the time of his arrest.
