Court sets 10 Sept for testimony in ex-IGP Benazir corruption case
The hearing was deferred after no witnesses appeared before the court; testimony from 15 of 28 listed witnesses has been completed.
A Dhaka court today (17 August) deferred the recording of testimony in a corruption case against former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and set 10 September for the next hearing.
Judge Abdullah Al Mamun passed the order after no witnesses appeared before the court, said Ariful Islam, bench assistant to the court.
Earlier, on 8 March, the court accepted the charge sheet in the case and issued an arrest warrant against Benazir.
On 3 May, the same court framed charges against the former police chief and ordered the trial to begin.
So far, testimony from 15 of the 28 listed witnesses has been recorded.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on 15 December 2024 against Benazir on allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income, concealing asset information and laundering money.
After completing its investigation, the ACC submitted the charge sheet on 30 November 2025.
According to the charge sheet, Benazir declared fixed assets worth Tk6.45 crore and movable assets worth Tk5.74 crore in his wealth statement.
However, the investigation found fixed assets worth Tk7.52 crore and movable assets worth Tk8.15 crore in his name, putting the total value of his assets at Tk15.68 crore.
The investigation found that his legitimate income amounted to Tk6.59 crore, while his net savings after deducting expenses stood at Tk4.63 crore.
Investigators therefore alleged that he had accumulated Tk11.04 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income.
The charge sheet further alleged that Benazir concealed the illegal source, nature and ownership of the money by investing, transferring and converting it through various bank accounts, business entities and joint investment ventures.
