2 ‘extortionists’ killed in mob beating in Kamrangirchar, heavy police deployment in area

Two individuals were killed in a mob beating in the Sylheti Bazar area of Kamrangirchar, Dhaka.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kamrangirchar Police Station, Amirul Islam, confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased were members of an organised gang involved in robbery and extortion.
The deceased have been identified as Nadim, 35, and Masud, 30. Three others—Sohagh, 28, Nur Mohammad, 30, and Monir Hossain, 35, —were injured during the incident.
Locals stated that Masud and his associates had demanded Tk100,000 in extortion money from Nur Mohammad. When he refused to pay, they attacked him with a knife. Nur Mohammad's wife was also injured while trying to protect her husband. Later, a case was filed against the assailants, and in apparent retaliation, they attacked Nur Mohammad again yesterday (9 April) night.
Enraged by the attack, local residents surrounded the group and began beating them. Masud died on the spot, while Nadim succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital. Sohag was also injured during the mob assault and has been detained by police.
Tea vendor Nur Mohammad remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said OC Amirul Islam.
Law enforcement agencies have been heavily deployed in the area to maintain order following the incident, he added.
