Writ filed over scrapping of ordinance for separate judiciary secretariat
The cabinet secretary, secretary of the parliament secretariat, law secretary, and other relevant authorities have been named as respondents.
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the cancellation of an ordinance issued by the interim government to establish an independent and separate secretariat for the Supreme Court.
The hearing on the petition may take place today (20 April) before a High Court bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar.
Seven lawyers, including Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Saddam Hossain, filed the writ in the public interest.
The cabinet secretary, secretary of the parliament secretariat, law secretary, and other relevant authorities have been named as respondents.
On 9 April, parliament annulled three ordinances issued by the interim government, including those related to the appointment of Supreme Court judges and the establishment of an independent and separate secretariat for the court.
The bills were passed despite objections from the opposition. As a result, the judiciary is set to return to its previous structure, with no law governing the appointment of judges and the independent secretariat being abolished.
