Writ filed in HC challenging BCB's notice for new councillor nominations
Six councillors from different clubs, who were elected for a four-year term, submitted the petition to the relevant High Court bench today
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking the withdrawal of a notice issued to various clubs requesting nominations for councillors ahead of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) polls.
Six councillors from different clubs, who were elected for a four-year term, submitted the petition to the relevant High Court bench today (18 May).
The petitioners are Armanul Islam Nayan, Md Naim Howlader, Md Enamul Ahsan, Md Abdullah Orko, Akib Javed Munna, and Md Rakibul Islam.
The defendants in the writ include the secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports, the chairman of National Sports Council, the president of BCB's ad-hoc committee, the BCB chief executive officer, and the deputy commissioners of Bandarban, Khulna, Lakshmipur, Faridpur, Brahmanbaria and Dhaka.
Earlier on 13 May, the same six councillors had sent a legal notice to the government and the BCB via registered post. After receiving no response, they proceeded to file the writ.
According to their lawyer Md Shafiqul Islam the councillors were elected on 22 September 2025 at the district level for a four-year tenure and are still in office.
However, a fresh notice was issued on 6 May calling for new councillor nominations to form the general council ahead of the BCB election.
The petitioners argue that the notice was issued without legal authority and have demanded its withdrawal within three days, failing which further legal action would be pursued.
The legal notice also urged that the matter be resolved through arbitration in accordance with the BCB constitution.
Prior to this, on 7 April, National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the previous committee of the BCB and formed an 11-member ad-hoc body, naming former national captain Tamim Iqbal as its president.
The move follows an investigation by the NSC into the BCB elections held on 6 October last year, which found several irregularities.
The NSC has informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) about both the investigation report and the formation of the ad-hoc body.
The committee comprises Tamim Iqbal, Rashna Imam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khosru, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Athar Ali Khan, Tanvir Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam Babu and Fahim Sinha
