US citizen Enayet put on 4-day remand over links to ex-IGP Benazir’s money laundering case
Minutes after the remand order was issued, Enayet suddenly collapsed on a bench inside the dock
A Dhaka court has placed Bangladeshi-born US citizen Enayet Karim Chowdhury on a four-day remand in a case linked to the alleged money laundering of former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Judge Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order today (28 September) after a hearing on the remand plea, according to court sources.
Minutes after the remand order was issued, Enayet suddenly collapsed on a bench inside the dock. The judge then instructed the court's officer-in-charge to ensure immediate medical treatment at the nearest hospital. He was later carried to the court lock-up by on-duty police personnel.
'Conspiracy to overthrow interim govt': US citizen Enayet, associate sent to jail after remand
Earlier in the day, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Hafizul Islam, the investigation officer in the case, produced Enayet before the court and sought a five-day remand for interrogation.
No defence lawyer was present during the hearing.
According to the remand petition, Enayet, in collusion with Benazir, was involved in laundering Tk11.34 crore abroad through suspicious bank transactions and cash withdrawals.
The petition stated that interrogation was necessary to identify others linked to the crimes, determine the destinations of the laundered money, and trace assets allegedly purchased in the US, UAE, Malaysia, and Singapore under the names of Enayet and his family members.
On 20 February, the ACC filed a case against the former IGP, his wife, and daughters, accusing them of laundering Tk11.34 crore abroad through suspicious transactions.
During the probe, investigators found Enayet's involvement in the illicit fund transfers.
Enayet was earlier sent to jail under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroze Tithi on 13 September.
Later, on 15 September, he was placed on a two-day remand under the Anti-Terrorism Act. On 17 September, he was put on remand for five more days along with an associate in the same case. Since then, Enayet has remained in custody.
