RAB seizes unauthorised drugs from Lazz Pharma

A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided an outlet of Lazz Pharma at the capital's Kakrail area on Monday and seized a large amount of unauthorised drugs from the shop.

Palash Kumar Bosu, executive magistrate of RAB, said the mobile court seized 76 items of unapproved drugs from the shop. The market value of the seized drugs is Tk40 lakh.

"We seized a large consignment of unapproved drugs from Lazz Pharma as the shop could not show proper documents for the drugs," he added.

Palash Kumar Bosu said, "We also fined seven employees of Lazz Pharma a total of Tk29 lakh. Five employees have been fined Tk5 lakh each while two others Tk2 lakh each. They will be sent to jail for three months if they fail to pay the fine," he added.

The accused employees are Amirul Islam, Al-Amin, Mamunur Rashid, Hridoy Sorker, Raton Sorker, Rubel Hossain, Mustakin Nazim. Of them, Raton Sorker was a manager and Al- Amin was an accountant of Lazz Pharma.

The licence of the shop expired in 2018. Besides, they increased prices by tampering the price tags of medicines.

"We conducted a mobile court raid in Lazz Pharma. The medicine chain shop was selling unapproved foreign medicines," he added.

He said those medicines were collected from "luggage parties" and thus the government lost a large amount of tax over it.

A section of passengers who allegedly smuggle in different goods – including medicines – daily from different countries are known as "luggage parties".
