Attack on RAB camp in Jungle Salimpur occurred due to carelessness: DG
The RAB chief said that mobile checkpoints and search operations are being conducted in coordination with other law enforcement agencies at important locations in the capital and across the country.
Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Additional IGP Md Ahsan Habib Palash has said there have been certain weaknesses on the force's part in connection with the recent attack on a temporary RAB camp in Jungle Salimpur of Chattogram.
Stating that the incident occurred due to carelessness, he said, "The Yasin Bahini does not have the capability to overpower RAB."
After inspecting security arrangements at the National Eidgah Ground today (26 May), he said around 30 people have already been arrested over the incident.
Responding to a question, the DG said the attack did not take place on a permanent RAB camp. Rather, it occurred while preparations were underway to establish a new camp there, when the attack was carried out unexpectedly.
"There is no way to deny that the incident happened due to some carelessness on our part. However, they are not stronger than us and they do not have the capability to overpower us."
He further said that immediately after the attack, joint operations by RAB and police were intensified, and special camps have been set up in the area to conduct drives.
Operations will continue until those involved are completely eliminated, he said adding that the attackers will not get any chance to enter the area.
Speaking about the overall security situation surrounding Eid, the DG said there is currently no major security threat in the country.
"So far, we have not sensed any threat. However, even in the absence of threats, our regular intelligence surveillance and special security measures remain in place."
He also said that ahead of Eid, RAB has increased checkposts, robust patrolling, and surveillance in vulnerable areas across the country.
Special security arrangements have been taken for important Eid congregations, and searches are being carried out at various locations through mobile checkposts.
The DG further said that during Eid, as public presence decreases in the capital and major cities, the risks of theft, mugging, and burglary increase. Therefore, more patrol teams than before will work day and night this time, and nighttime patrols have been strengthened.
Mentioning that RAB is also active regarding sacrificial animal markets, he said action is being taken against illegally setting up cattle markets or forcibly compelling livestock-carrying vehicles to go to designated markets.
In addition, RAB's intelligence surveillance is continuing to prevent black marketing, adulterated products, and counterfeit goods in the market.
Special equipment has also been kept ready to prevent counterfeit currency, and operations against those involved are ongoing.
The DG also said surveillance has been intensified to prevent rumours on social media. He said, "Our online monitoring team is working to ensure that no one can spread misleading information surrounding Eid."
