RAB arrests one suspect in case over Jubo Dal leader murder in Raozan
The case names 11 individuals as accused, along with seven to eight unidentified persons.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a named suspect in connection with the broad daylight killing of a Jubo Dal leader in Chattogram's Raozan on Saturday (13 June).
The arrested individual, Md Raihan, 24, is the son of Abul Hashem of Peyada Para in Raozan upazila. He is the eighth accused named in the first information report (FIR) filed over the murder of Rangunia upazila Jubo Dal Senior Joint Convener Maksudul Haque Chowdhury, 45.
RAB said Raihan's involvement was also identified during an ongoing investigation into a separate case filed with Raozan Police Station over preparations for a robbery.
In a press release issued this afternoon (16 June), RAB-7 said Raihan was arrested during a raid at around 10:05pm on Sunday (14 June) in the Bara Thakurpara area of Bagowan union in Raozan, following a tip-off.
He was later handed over to Raozan Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Earlier today, the victim's brother, Muhammad Piarul Haque Chowdhury Swapan, a former chairman of Betagi Union Parishad in Rangunia upazila, filed the murder case with Raozan Police Station.
The case names 11 individuals as accused, along with seven to eight unidentified persons.
Police said the FIR includes the names of five individuals identified through CCTV footage, as well as Jaker Mia, who was earlier arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killing.
According to the complaint, Maksudul was seeking his party's nomination for the post of chairman in the upcoming Betagi Union Parishad election.
The FIR states that armed assailants opened fire on Maksudul while he was standing in front of Ashrafia Pharmacy in the Pahartali Chowmuhani Bazar area of Raozan around midday on Saturday, killing him on the spot.
It further alleges that after the shooting, Raihan took the victim's wallet and cash from his trouser pocket before fleeing the scene.
Following the killing, leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations staged protest marches and road blockades in the Pahartali and Ichakhali areas of Rangunia, demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
