Keraniganj double murder: Tutor’s husband placed on 3-day remand
A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for Humayun Kabir, husband of tutor Mim Akter, in connection with the recovery of the decomposed bodies of a missing student and her mother from the tutor's flat in Keraniganj.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed issued the order yesterday (20 January) following a police petition, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Dhaka district's prosecution department Sumaiya Akhter, confirmed the matter.
According to court sources, after police produced Kabir before the court, Lawyer Nashidus Zaman Nishan argued in favour of granting remand on behalf of the complainant. Since no defence lawyer appeared for the accused, the court ordered three days' remand after the hearing.
On 25 December at around 5pm, Zubaida Rahman Fatema, 14, went missing after going to Mim's house for tuition. That evening, her mother Rokeya Rahman, 32, also disappeared. When Rokeya's husband Shahin, failed to trace them, at first, he filed a general diary with the Keraniganj police, and after not seeing any progress, he lodged an abduction case on 6 January.
On 14 January, 21 days after their disappearance, police recovered the decomposed bodies of Fatema and Rokeya from a house in Keraniganj's Muktirbag area under Kalindi union.
On the same day, police arrested Fatema's tutor Mim and her sister Nurjahan. They were produced before court the following day, where they agreed to give confessional statements. As Nurjahan is under 18, the court ordered her to be sent to the Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur and sent Mim to jail after recording her statement.
On 17 January at around 10:30am, police arrested Humayun Kabir from the Muktirbag area of Keraniganj.
