BNP leader shot by two men on motorcycle in Keraniganj dies
A union-level BNP leader who was shot reportedly by two men riding a motorcycle in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Thursday night has died today (24 January) while undergoing treatment.
The deceased, Hasan Molla, 45, was the general secretary of Hazratpur Union BNP in the upazila.
Keraniganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M Saiful Alam confirmed that he died around 4pm today at Holy Family Hospital in the capital.
Speaking to The Business Standard, the OC said Hasan Molla's condition deteriorated on Thursday night, prompting doctors to shift him from Dhaka Medical College Hospital to Holy Family Hospital in Moghbazar, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting incident occurred around 9:00pm on Thursday (22 January) in the Dhalikandi area of Ward 7 of the union. Hasan sustained a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.
OC Saiful Alam said no case has yet been filed in connection with the incident.
BNP Secretary General mourns
In a condolence message issued through a press release today, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "I express my deep sorrow and sympathy to the family members of Hazratpur Union BNP General Secretary Hasan Molla, who died after being critically injured in a shooting by miscreants."
He alleged that Hasan Molla was targeted for being a strong soldier of nationalist forces and described the incident as a premeditated killing. On the eve of the 13th parliamentary election, he said it was part of a far-reaching plan to destabilise the country. He further alleged that the government's failure to improve law and order has allowed killings and violence to continue, and called for immediate action against terrorists to eliminate fear and panic from society.
