The primary motive behind the brutal killings was an attempted break-in to steal a loan-related stamp belonging to the victim’s husband, Sujan Barua
Police have completed the investigation into the double murder case of a woman and her teenage daughter in Chattogram's Anwara Upazila and submitted a chargesheet against the lone accused within 10 days of filing the case.
The Chattogram district police confirmed the matter yesterday (24 June) through a press release, stating that the chargesheet was pressed against Rimon Barua, also known as Tejpriya Barua, under sections 302, 307, and 323 of the Penal Code 1860.
The primary motive behind the brutal killings was an attempted break-in to steal a loan-related stamp belonging to the victim's husband, Sujan Barua.
According to the investigation findings, on the night of 13 June, Annie Barua, 40, and her daughter Priyonti Barua, 16, were stabbed to death at their home in Chenamoti Barua Para village under Paraikora union.
Annie's young son was also seriously injured during the attack. Receiving a call through the national emergency service 999, multiple teams from the Anwara Police Station and the district Detective Branch (DB) immediately rushed to the scene to launch an inquiry.
Through the deployment of information technology, intelligence gathering, and a series of drives, law enforcers arrested Rimon alias Tejpriya Barua from the Patiya Railway Station area while he was attempting to go into hiding.
Following his arrest, police recovered the knife used in the killings from a canal behind the victims' house, and Annie's missing mobile phone from a ditch beside the railway line in Patiya based on information provided by the accused.
A video containing the dying declaration of the victim was also logged into the case's evidence.
Furthermore, the accused gave a confessional statement before a court under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The case was solved after analysing all evidentiary materials, including the post-mortem report, medical documents, recovered evidence, and testimonies from 22 witnesses, which included four police personnel.
At a prior press briefing on 15 June, Chattogram Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam explained that Rimon had been lying in wait with a knife near the back door of the house to steal the stamp.
When Annie came outside and spotted him, she raised an alarm, prompting the accused to stab her. Hearing her mother's screams, Priyonti rushed to the spot and was also stabbed indiscriminately by the assailant, he said.
