2019 Dhanmondi double murder: Verdict in case over killing of woman, domestic worker on 17 Feb
A Dhaka court has deferred the delivery of the verdict to 17 February in the case involving the murders of an elderly woman and a domestic worker in the capital's Dhanmondi area in 2019.
The court of Dhaka's Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tawhida Akhter set the new date today (8 February).
Confirming the development, plaintiff's lawyer Khalilur Rahman Asad said today had earlier been fixed for the verdict. Accordingly, police produced the two accused, who are currently in custody, in court.
However, as the verdict was not ready, the court rescheduled it for 17 February.
The accused are household employee Bachchu Mia and domestic worker Surabhi Akhter Nahid.
On the night of 1 November 2019, the bodies of industrialist Kazi Monir Uddin Tarim's mother-in-law Afroz Begum, 65, and her domestic help Diti, 18, were recovered from a building named Lobelia House in Dhanmondi.
The victims, residents of the building's fifth floor, were found with fatal throat wounds.
Afroz lived in one flat, while her daughter Dilruba Sultana Ruba resided with her husband and children in a duplex apartment comprising the opposite flat and the sixth-floor flat above it.
Dilruba filed the case two days after the incident.
Following the investigation, PBI investigating officer Mojibur Rahman submitted a charge sheet on 1 February 2022 against Bachchu Mia and Surabhi Akhter Nahid.
On 11 October that year, the court framed charges against the two accused, formally beginning the trial.
During the proceedings, testimonies of 25 out of 32 witnesses were recorded.
