ICT summons BNP's Fazlur on 8 Dec to explain remarks on crimes against humanity trial
The prosecution said that on 23 November, Fazlur appeared on Channel 24’s talk show “Muktobak” and questioned the tribunal’s structure and its trial procedures. He also said, “I do not accept this trial”
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered BNP leader Advocate Fazlur Rahman to appear on 8 December to explain his remarks questioning the crimes against humanity trial process of July Uprising cases.
The order was issued today (30 November) by International Crimes Tribunal-1 after hearing a contempt of court petition filed by the prosecution.
During the hearing, the tribunal said such negative comments are similar to treason.
Earlier, on 26 November, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim submitted the petition on behalf of the chief prosecutor.
That day, a partial hearing took place at the ICT, which then set today's date for further hearing in the presence of the ICT chairman.
The prosecution said that on 23 November, Fazlur appeared on Channel 24's talk show "Muktobak" and questioned the tribunal's structure and its trial procedures. He also said, "I do not accept this trial". The prosecution claimed his remarks amounted to direct contempt of court.
During the earlier hearing, the tribunal asked about his identity. Prosecutor Tamim said he is a former adviser to the BNP chairperson and a nominated candidate for Kishoreganj-4 in the upcoming national election.
He added that the BNP had suspended his membership and party positions for three months on 26 August for violating party discipline by making negative remarks about the July uprising.
Advocate Md Fazlur Rahman is the BNP nominated candidate for Kishoreganj-4, which includes Itna, Mithamain and Austagram.
