HC orders probe into dog bite deaths in Gaibandha
According to the petition, 17 people were injured in dog attacks across Gaibandha, while five deaths were reported.
The High Court has directed the Gaibandha civil surgeon to investigate reported deaths caused by dog bites in Kanchibari and Chaprhatia unions of Sundarganj upazila last month and submit a report.
The order was passed today (20 May) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice SM Saifur Rahman following a preliminary hearing of a writ petition.
Lawyer Shamim Haider Patwary represented the petitioner in court.
According to the petition, 17 people were injured in dog attacks across Gaibandha, while five deaths were reported.
The writ also sought directives for adequate compensation for the families of the deceased and government-funded treatment for the injured.
The health secretary, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Gaibandha deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and 11 others have been made respondents in the case.
Speaking to reporters, lawyer Shamim said the victims initially received anti-rabies vaccines from private hospitals after failing to get them at government facilities, yet five people later died.
He added that the court has instructed the civil surgeon to submit a detailed report after Eid, examining what happened, the number of deaths, causes, and whether any negligence was involved.
