A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and the party's Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, along with 74 other leaders and activists, in yet another case filed over the burning of vehicles in front of Dhaka's Bar Council in 2019.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Foyez issued the acquittal order today (15 September), accepting the final report submitted by the police.
Syed Zainul Abedin Mezbah, Mirza Fakhrul's counsel mentioned that yesterday, the same court had acquitted Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas, along with 70 others, in another case filed against the same incident as he confirmed the day's development.
He stated that this particular case was also politically motivated to harass the leaders. Police, upon finding no evidence during their investigation, recommended their acquittal in the final report, which the court accepted.
Among the other notable accused who were acquitted are BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, and leaders Saiful Alam Nirob and Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
According to the case file, the incident occurred on 11 December 2019, on the eve of a bail hearing for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
Sub-Inspector Shamsur Rahman of Shahbagh Police Station filed the case, alleging that miscreants set fire to motorcycles and other vehicles in front of the Bar Council's main gate to influence the court's decision.
The investigating officer submitted a final report on 10 May of this year, recommending the acquittal of all 77 accused due to a lack of evidence.
