A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, and 65 others from a case under the Explosives Act filed with Ramna Model Police Station during the BNP's grand rally in 2023.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Foyez passed the order today (16 September) after taking into cognisance the final report of the police, Defence lawyer Zakir Hossain Jewel told The Business Standard.
Other prominent names include Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury; former home minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury; Shahjahan Omar; BNP Chairperson's adviser Zainul Abedin Farroque; Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi; Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon; Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel; student affairs secretary Rakibul Islam Bakul; and Nipun Roy Chowdhury, among others.
According to the case documents, the BNP had called a grand rally in Dhaka on 28 October 2023 as part of its central programme, while the Awami League held a counter-rally on the same day.
Violent clashes broke out, leaving many injured as police and then ruling party activists reportedly confronted BNP supporters.
Two days later, on 31 October, a case was filed with Ramna Model Police Station under the Penal Code and Explosives Act by Sub-Inspector Abul Awal.
Following the investigation, police submitted a final report on 21 September last year, recommending the discharge of all 67 accused BNP leaders and activists as the allegations could not be substantiated.
