70 including Fakhrul, Abbas exempted in 2019 sabotage case

Seventy people, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, have been exempted in a 2019 sabotage case filed with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order today (14 September).
Other exempted defendants include BNP Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, advocate Zainal Abedin, Khairul Kabir Khokon, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Fazlul Haque Milan, Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel, and Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
According to Fakhrul's lawyer, Syed Zainul Abedin Mezbah, Shahbagh police recently submitted a final report stating the allegations could not be verified. The court accepted the report and exempted all the accused.
According to the case statement, the case relates to 12 December 2019, when the High Court hearing for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case was scheduled.
On 11 December the same year, two motorcycles were set on fire at Kadomphul Crossing and the High Court Mazar Gate water pump area under Shahbagh Police Station, allegedly to influence the hearing and pressure the judiciary.
On the same day, Sub-Inspector Idris Ali of Shahbagh Police Station filed a case regarding this, naming Fakhrul and 70 others.
