'Conspiracy to overthrow interim govt': US citizen Enayet, associate sent to jail after remand
The remand application stated that they were found to be involved in a conspiracy to create public panic and damage state property through mass protests, having held secret meetings with political leaders and business figures
A Dhaka court has ordered authorities to send US citizen of Bangladeshi origin Enayet Karim Chowdhury and his associate SM Golam Mostafa Azad to jail following their remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over suspicious movements and alleged conspiracy to overthrow the interim government.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman passed the order today (22 September) after the accused were produced before the court at the end of a five-day remand.
The investigation officer of the case, Inspector Md Akhtar Morshed of the Detective Branch (DB), requested that the accused be kept in jail for the sake of a fair investigation, stating that further interrogation may be required.
The case, filed by police at the Ramna Model Police Station, alleges that Enayet, as an agent of a foreign intelligence agency, entered Bangladesh to destabilise the country, undermine public safety, and threaten national sovereignty with the aim of overthrowing the current interim government.
The remand application stated that they were found to be involved in a conspiracy to create public panic and damage state property through mass protests, having held secret meetings with political leaders and business figures.
This is the second remand for Enayet Karim Chowdhury. He was arrested on 13 September under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for suspicious movements in a car around Dhaka's Minto Road.
The court later granted a two-day remand on 15 September and a fresh five-day remand for both him and his associate on 17 September under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
