Child rape attempt in Bakalia: Accused confesses in court
After recording his statement, the court sent him to jail.
Monir Hossain, 30, the accused in the attempted rape of a four-year-old child in the Dakshin Bakalia area of Chattogram city, has given a confessional statement in court.
The case's investigating officer and officer-in-charge (investigation) of Bakalia Police Station, Tanvir Ahmmed, presented the accused before the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate-1 Judge Abu Bakar Siddique yesterday afternoon (22 May), where Monir confessed to his crime.
After recording his statement, the court sent him to jail.
Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman confirmed the matter, saying police arrested the accused shortly after the incident and he later admitted to the offence before the court.
According to police and family sources, the child's father was in Dhaka and her mother was at work in a garment factory when the incident occurred on Thursday (21 May). As the parents were away, the couple's three children were staying with their grandmother.
Taking advantage of the situation, Monir, a local decoration shop employee, tricked the four-year-old girl and allegedly attempted to rape her.
Following complaints from locals, Bakalia police launched a drive and arrested Monir around 3pm from a warehouse room near Balurmath in the Nur Hossain Chairman Ghat area.
Monir Hossain, originally from the Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla district, was living in the Ali Store Building in Miakhan Nagar, Bakalia. He is the father of two daughters.
The victim's father filed a case with Bakalia Police Station yesterday, naming Monir as the sole accused.
Police said the extent of the assault would be confirmed after receiving the medical report from the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC).
Meanwhile, tensions flared in the Chairman Ghat area on Thursday evening after Monir's arrest as an angry mob attempted to snatch him from police custody.
Witnesses said clashes broke out between police and locals, with protesters hurling brickbats at police and vandalising and setting fire to several police pickup vans.
Police fired tear gas shells, sound grenades and blank rounds to bring the situation under control.
At least 30 people, including police personnel and journalists, were injured in the violence. Police remained effectively trapped for nearly six hours before safely transferring the accused to secure custody around 10pm.
Police said four people have so far been arrested over the attack on police, obstruction of official duties and vandalism of police vehicles. A separate case has also been filed over the incident.
