Jucsu blocks Dhaka-Aricha Highway over failure to arrest rape attempt suspect
They allege that even after seeing images of the suspect, police have failed to arrest him under the highest level of state security
The Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway today (18 May), protesting the failure to arrest the accused in an attempted rape incident on campus.
Jucsu leaders enforced the blockade at around 4:40pm.
They said that six days have passed since the 12 May incident, yet the main accused has not been identified despite the presence of CCTV footage.
They alleged that even after seeing images of the suspect, police have failed to arrest him under the highest level of state security.
"We demand that the state treat the attempted rape incident with seriousness and take appropriate measures to ensure the accused is arrested and brought to justice. That is why we have blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway," a Jucsu leader said.
The protesting leaders withdrew the blockade at 4:57pm.
On the night of 12 May, a female student was allegedly assaulted and subjected to an attempted rape on the JU campus.
The incident reportedly took place around 11:30pm on the road in front of the old Fazilatunnesa Hall near the Al-Beruni Hall extension area.
The university administration later filed a case over attempted rape and attempted murder in connection with the incident.
On 16 May, Jucsu leaders threatened to blockade the Dhaka-Aricha Highway if there was any negligence in arresting the accused.
On 17 May, students of Jahangirnagar University staged a blockade in front of the university's new administrative building, demanding swift justice.
