Block anti-national contents published on journalist Kanak Sarwar’s YouTube channel: HC

The High Court (HC) has directed to block anti-national contents uploaded on journalist Kanak Sarwar's YouTube channel.

The authorities concerned, including the Home Ministry secretary and the BTRC chairman, have been asked to implement the directive.

An HC bench comprising of Justice MD Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Mahmud Hasan Talukder passed the order after hearing a writ petition. Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque appeared for the writ petitioner.

In this regard, Shah Manjurul Haque said, 'Kanak Sarwar published anti-national contents on his YouTube channel on August 17 which involved several people including Liberal Democratic Party President Colonel (retired) Dr Oli Ahmed."

"During an interview with Kanak, which was later published on his YouTube channel, the LDP president Oli Ahmed stated that Ziaur Rahman was the interim president of independent Bangladesh."

"I have challenged his statement in court and asked the court to ban his book as well. There are many negative things written about Bangabandhu in different pages of his book."

"The court also issued a rule regarding the controversial contents that Kanak uploaded on YouTube. The court has ordered to block/disable/stop the highly controversial contents," added Manjurul Haque.

Earlier on November 17, Barrister Imtiaz Uddin Ahmed Asif filed a writ petition with the HC seeking its directives over the anti-national contents on journalist Kanak Sarwar's YouTube channel.

The court passed the order in response to the writ.

On September 7, Barrister Asif issued a legal notice to Oli Ahmed alleging that he had distorted the national history by stating Ziaur Rahman as the 'interim president' of independent Bangladesh.

Barrister Asif said, "Oli Ahmed gave an interview on Kanak Sarwar's Facebook and YouTube channel on August 17. There he claimed that Ziaur Rahman was 'the first interim president' of independent Bangladesh."

"But in the constitution, it has been clearly stated that Bangabandhu is the first president and Syed Nazrul Islam is the first vice-president of independent Bangladesh. The matter has remained un-disputed since the independence. So, this statement distorts history and that is why I have given the legal notice," he added.

He said that Oli Ahmed had responded to the notice. However, he remained adamant in his statement.

Barrister Asif then added Oli Ahmed's reply to the given legal notice and filed the writ petition.

The former Ekushey Television (ETV) reporter Kanak Sarwar has been living abroad after getting bail in a case filed against him on sedition charge in 2015.
