Former law minister Anisul Huq, former adviser to the prime minister Salman F Rahman, and two others have been formally placed under arrest in another murder case linked to last year's July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia's court granted a police application today (22 September) to record them as arrested in the case filed over the killing of tenth-grader Mahfuzur Rahman in Mirpur, confirmed Public Prosecutor Md Omar Faruk Faruqi.
The other two formally implicated as arrested in the case are former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam and former DMP deputy commissioner of Mirpur zone Jasim Uddin Molla.
The four accused, who were already in jail for several other cases, were brought before the court during the hearing.
Investigating officer Md Tariqul Islam, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Police Station, had filed the application on 17 September.
According to the case file, Mahfuzur Rahman, a student of Mirpur Abbas Uddin High School, joined a peaceful protest at Mirpur-10 on 19 July last year during the July Uprising.
Police and Awami League activists opened fire on protesters that afternoon and a bullet struck Mahfuzur near his right ear, passing through his head and killing him on the spot.
The victim's father, Abdul Mannan, later filed the murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station.
In the charge sheet, Salman F Rahman was listed as the seventh accused, Anisul Huq as eighth, Jasim Uddin on 15, and Atiqul Islam as the 20th.
Police previously arrested Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman on 13 August last year from Sadarghat while they were allegedly attempting to flee by river.
Atiqul Islam was arrested from Mohakhali DOHS on 27 October 2024, and Jasim Uddin from Rangpur on 30 October last year.
Since their arrests, all four have remained in jail in connection with various cases tied to the July Uprising.
