A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand to former law minister Anisul Huq in a case lodged over the murder of garment worker Fazlul Karim during the July-August mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Imran Ahammed passed the order as police produced the former law minister before the court and pleaded to place him on a ten-day remand in the case lodged with the capital's Uttara East Police Station.

Anisul was arrested from the Sadarghat area as he along with Salman F Rahman was trying to flee the capital through the waterways on 13 August.

Fazlul Karim got shot on 5 August as he was taking part in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Uttara. He was rushed to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

His brother filed the case against 40 people in this connection.

The court today also placed under arrest eight others, including former adviser to the prime minister Salman F Rahman, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president and former information minister Hasanul Haque Inu, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, Bangladesh Workers' Party President and former private aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, former ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former industries state minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder.

They were shown arrested in multiple cases filed with Mohammadpur, Badda, Paltan, Mirpur, Uttara police stations.

The court also granted a three-day remand for former MP Abdullah Al Islam Jacob in a murder case with the Rupnagar police station. 

Earlier on 18 November, 13 people among the 46 accused, in cases filed over the genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the revolution that toppled the Awami League government in July-August this year, were presented in front of the International Crimes Tribunal.

The 13 accused included former law minister Anisul Huq, former civil aviation and tourism minister Faruk Khan, Worker's Party President Rashed Khan Menon, former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, former state minister for post, telecommunication and ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former energy adviser to former PM Hasina Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, former private industry and investment adviser to former PM Hasina Salman F Rahman, former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, former state minister of Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder, former minister of textiles and jute Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, and former home secretary Jahangir Alam.

A total of 55 cases have been filed against Anisul Huq. The court has granted him a total of 43 days in remand in seven cases so far.

So far, the police have arrested at least 90 people, including several former ministers, government officials, Awami League leaders and journalists.

There are 253 cases against Sheikh Hasina across the country, 48 cases against Salman, 22 Menon, 47 against Palak, and 20 against Dipu Moni.
