ACC sues ex-Chattogram ADC Kamrul Hasan, wife over Tk21cr 'illegal wealth'
Previously, an internal CMP probe confirmed Kamrul’s involvement in corruption, leading the CMP to recommend his suspension to the police headquarters back in 2024.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against former additional deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Mohammad Kamrul Hasan and his wife Saima Hasan for allegedly amassing illegal assets worth over Tk21 crore and concealing wealth information.
The cases were lodged yesterday (1 April) at the ACC's Chattogram District Integrated Office-1 by Assistant Director Sayed Alam.
According to the case statements, Kamrul Hasan allegedly amassed assets worth Tk17.62 crore inconsistent with his known sources of income. Furthermore, he is accused of concealing information regarding assets amounting to Tk10.78 crore in the wealth statement submitted to the commission.
In a parallel case, his wife, Saima, faces charges of providing false information and concealing Tk1.20 crore in her wealth statement.
The graft inquiry also found she acquired assets worth Tk3.14 crore beyond her known sources of income. The commission alleged that Kamrul, during his service as a senior policeman, accumulated this wealth through illegal means and colluded with his wife to transfer properties into her name.
Confirming the development, ACC Chattogram Deputy Director Shobel Ahmed stated, "The investigation will also examine whether they own additional undisclosed assets."
The filing of these cases follows a series of departmental and legal actions against the police official.
Previously, an internal CMP probe confirmed Kamrul's involvement in corruption, leading the CMP to recommend his suspension to the police headquarters back in 2024.
The internal investigation revealed that while in charge of the Chattogram Metropolitan Court's hajatkhana (detention cell), Kamrul allegedly misappropriated approximately Tk13.31 lakh from the government treasury between 2021 and June 2023 by filing fraudulent food bills for detainees.
On 9 July 2024, a Chattogram court ordered the confiscation of the couple's assets worth over Tk11 crore following a preliminary ACC inquiry that found significant disparities between their legitimate income and accumulated wealth.
ACC findings revealed that Kamrul, who joined the police force as a sub-inspector in 1989, owns a house in Pahartali, a 2,570-square-foot flat near the DIG office area in Khulshi, and a plot in the Ananya Residential Area.
He also holds ownership stakes in two shopping complexes in Savar – Savar City Center and Savar City Tower. Additionally, investigators found four lighter vessels registered in his wife's name.
Kamrul Hasan, who previously served as officer-in-charge at Hathazari and Banshkhali police stations, was most recently attached to the Public Order Management Division of the CMP following his transfer from the local court's prosecution department.
